Weather Report - Fūshinjō

Three letters from Kukai to Saicho in the early Heian period (early 9th century) were later made into a single scroll. National Treasure. The name comes from the opening of the first letter, which begins with "Fushinunsho...". Originally five letters were handed down, but one was stolen during the Kamakura period, and the remaining one was confiscated by Toyotomi Hidetsugu in 1592 (Bunroku 1). It is estimated to have been written by Kukai when he was around 40 years old, between 812 and 813 (Kōnin 3-4). It is the first of the calligraphy remaining by Kukai, who is considered one of the Three Great Calligraphers, and has been the most widely acclaimed since ancient times, and is an important historical material for understanding the friendship between Kukai and Saicho. It was handed down to Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei, but was donated to To-ji Temple (Kyoogokoku-ji Temple) in Kyoto in the past, where it remains to this day.

平安前期（9世紀初頭）空海から最澄にあてた手紙三通を、のちに一巻の巻物に仕立てたもの。国宝。名の由来は第一通目の冒頭に「風信雲書……」とあるのによる。もと五通が伝わったが、一通は鎌倉時代に盗難にあい、いま一通は豊臣(とよとみ)秀次が1592年（文禄1）に召し上げた。空海40歳前後、812～813年（弘仁3～4）の筆跡と推定される。三筆の1人にあげられる空海の遺墨中の第一として、古来もっとも喧伝(けんでん)されており、空海と最澄の交遊を知るうえにも重要な史料である。比叡山(ひえいざん)延暦寺(えんりゃくじ)に伝来したが、古く京都・東寺（教王護国寺）に寄進され現在に至る。
