Pressure gradient force

...It is basically caused by unequal heating of the atmosphere at various latitudes and altitudes. When the two ends of a mass of air are heated to different degrees, the air expands at the warmer end, creating a pressure difference compared to the other end. This pressure difference creates a force, the pressure gradient force, that accelerates air from high pressure to low pressure, creating wind.

The pressure difference should be quickly eliminated if the air moves due to the pressure gradient force, but the pattern of pressure distribution does not generally change suddenly and the wind blows relatively steadily because the wind does not cross the isobars, but blows almost parallel to them in a state of equilibrium.
