Drunken Empress - Kihisuishu

A Chinese Peking opera. The story is found in the Ming Dynasty legend "The Mirror of Dust," and the play is said to have been written by Wu Hongxi of the Qing Dynasty. This play also exists in regional operas such as the Chuan, Hui, Han, Gui, Xiang, and Qinqiang. Yang Guifei holds a banquet at the Baihua Pavilion, but the promised Emperor Xuanzong does not show up, and she is informed that he has gone to his wife, Consort Mei, who is competing for his favor. Her feelings of expectation and pride suddenly change to jealousy, resentment, and grief. Intoxicated, Yang Guifei confides her worries, and returns home empty-handed, supported by her maids. Mei Lanfang, a famous female actor in Peking opera, learned this play from Lu Sanbao, but added her own original adaptations and creations, and produced a dignified performance that elegantly expressed the complex psychology of the harem women, whose dignity and humanity as court ladies are violated, through singing, dancing, and other techniques. Since performing in Japan in 1919 (Taisho 8), the play has been highly praised in Japan as well. The Mei school's stage style has been carried on by Xia Huihua and others.

中国の京劇戯曲。物語は明(みん)の伝奇『磨塵鑑(まじんかん)』にみられ、戯曲は清(しん)代の呉鴻喜(ごこうき)の作といわれる。川(せん)、徽(き)、漢(かん)、桂(けい)、湘(しょう)、秦腔(しんこう)などの各地方劇にもこの劇目は存在する。楊貴妃(ようきひ)は百花亭で宴を張るが、約束の玄宗皇帝は現れず、寵(ちょう)を争う梅妃のもとへ行ったと知らされる。期待、得意の心情は一転、嫉妬(しっと)、怨恨(えんこん)、悲嘆に変わる。酔いしれた楊貴妃は煩悶(はんもん)を吐露し、侍女に支えられむなしく帰る。京劇の名女方(おんながた)梅蘭芳(メイランファン)はこの劇を路三宝(ろさんぽう)より学んだが、独自の改編創造を加え、宮廷貴婦人の気品や人間性を踏みにじられている後宮女性の複雑な心理を歌唱、舞踊などで典雅に表現し風格ある上演とした。1919年（大正8）の来日公演以来わが国でも絶賛を博した。梅(めい)派の舞台は夏慧華(かすいか)らにより継承されている。
