...The script "1905" originally prepared by Eisenstein and Nina Agadzhanova-Syutko was several hundred pages long, attempting to depict the revolution in general, but only half a page of it, which was about the mutiny of the Black Sea Fleet, was completed as a "tragedy in five acts," consisting of "Man and the Maggot," "Drama on the Aft Deck," "Appeal from the Dead," "Odessa Steps," and "Encounter with the Fleet." Based on actual historical events, the protagonists were not individuals but groups, and except for the central roles, amateurs were used through "typage" (casting based on types), proving that "montage" is more eloquent than the acting of actors, and that "montage" is a means of conveying ideas through images. In particular, the famous Odessa Steps massacre scene, which embodied Eisenstein's theory of "montage of attraction" published in 1923 and created a violent dynamic rhythm and tension through the image of a "clash" born from a combination of cuts, is considered a model for montage.
