Revenues generated from a thing are called fruit, and the thing that produces fruit is called principal. There are natural fruits and statutory fruits. Things that are collected in accordance with the use of the thing are called natural fruits (Civil Code, Article 88, Paragraph 1), and examples of these include mandarin oranges, mulberry leaves, milk, and minerals. In contrast, money and other things received as compensation for the use of a thing are called statutory fruits (Civil Code, Article 88, Paragraph 2), and examples of these include interest, house rent, and land rent. Real estate, movable property, and money that produce such fruits are the principal. However, the principal for interest is called the principal. Natural fruits belong to the person who has the right to collect them when they are separated from the principal, and statutory fruits are acquired pro rata for the period during which the right to collect them exists (Civil Code, Article 89).

物から生ずる収益を果実といい、果実を生じさせる物を元物という。果実には、天然果実と法定果実がある。物の用方に従い収取する物が天然果実であり（民法88条1項）、ミカン、桑葉、牛乳、鉱物などがこれに属する。これに対し、物の使用の対価として受くべき金銭その他の物を法定果実といい（同条2項）、利息、家賃、地代などがこれに属する。このような果実を生じさせる不動産、動産、金銭などが元物である。ただし、利息に対する元物は、元本(がんぽん)と称される。天然果実は、その元物より分離するときにこれを収取する権利を有する者に属し、法定果実は、これを収取する権利の存続期間日割をもってこれを取得する（同法89条）。
