Cynewulf

An 8th century English poet. Dates of birth and death unknown. An Anglo-Saxon religious poet, his name was discovered in 1840. He is known as the author of the long poem "Christ," consisting of three parts, "The Descent of Christ," "The Ascension," and "The Last Judgment Day," the hagiographical works "St. Juliana" and "Elen," and the short story "The Fate of the Apostles," which lists the names and deeds of the twelve apostles. All of these are representative works of religious poetry in Old English, but "Elen" in particular is considered a masterpiece that fully demonstrates the author's deep scholarship and traditional Old English poetic techniques.

8世紀のイギリスの詩人。生没年不詳。アングロ･サクソン人の宗教詩人で，1840年にその名が発見された。〈キリストの降臨〉〈昇天〉〈最後の審判日〉の3部からなる長編詩《キリスト》，聖者伝を扱った《セント･ジュリアーナ》と《エレーネ》，十二使徒の名と事績を列挙した短編《使徒の運命》の作者として知られる。いずれも古英語による宗教詩の代表作品であるが，特に《エレーネ》は作者の深い学殖と，伝統的古英詩の技法が遺憾なく発揮された秀作とされている。
