Gold-dusted copper

...Amalgam is made by mixing gold or silver with mercury, which is then applied to the polished copper surface, then heated over charcoal to evaporate the mercury and fix the gold or silver. This technique has long been called 'kondo' or 'kindeido'. Most cast Buddhist statues from the Asuka and Nara periods were gilt bronze, and the majority of Buddhist altar fittings and other metalwork were also gilded.
