An old town in Masuda County, central Gifu Prefecture. Most of it is in the Hida Highlands, with the main settlement at the confluence of the south-flowing Maze River and Masuda River. It was a key location on the Hida Highway, which marked the entrance to Hida from Mino. The Takayama Main Line runs through the town, and it produces timber, tea, rice, and other products. It is home to Nakayama Shichiri. 岐阜県中部,益田(ました)郡の旧町。大部分は飛騨高地で,南流する馬瀬(まぜ)川と益田川の合流点に中心集落がある。美濃から飛騨への入口をなす飛騨街道の要地であった。高山本線が通じ,木材,茶,米などを産する。中山七里(なかやましちり)がある。2004年3月益田郡萩原町,小坂町,下呂町,馬瀬村と合併し,下呂市となる。167.84km2。7727人(2003)。
