An art term. Today, the most common definition is a flat tool used to hold and mix paints when painting. Palettes of various materials and shapes have been used since ancient times depending on the properties of the paints and painting techniques. When using water-based paints, palettes made of glass, ceramic, or enameled metal are often used, while for oil painting, palettes made of hardwoods such as walnut or cherry are popular. These palettes usually have a hole for the thumb and are designed to be held in the left hand (for right-handed people). They are usually rectangular or oval in shape, but there are also large irregular palettes called arm or Franzen types, and in studios, paint cabinets or desk tops are sometimes used as palettes.

In Egyptian archaeology, a palette is a flat slab of slate or schist used as a writing tool for scribes, a cosmetic tool, or for grinding or melting pigments and cosmetics. In the late Predynastic period, palettes with elaborate relief decorations were made for ceremonial use, far from being of practical use. The only indication of their functional role is the bowl-shaped depression in the center, and they are more valuable as art relics than as tools. A well-known example is the "Palette of King Narmer" (Egyptian Museum, Cairo).

Derived from the original palette as a painting tool, it is sometimes used in a metaphorical sense. When an artist selects only a limited number of paints and prepares them on a palette, the way in which the paints are selected, the arrangement on the palette, or the set of selected paints is called a palette. Furthermore, it means a formalized analysis of the use of paints and color adjustments of a single painting, a single artist, or a single school. Expressions such as "a bright (dark) palette" are used in this sense.

美術用語。今日もっとも一般的に用いられる意味としては、絵を描くときに絵の具を出しておいたり、混ぜ合わせたりするために用いる平板状の用具である。絵の具の性質や絵画技法に応じて古くからさまざまな材質や形状のものが使われてきた。水性の絵の具を使う場合にはガラスや陶器、あるいはほうろう引きの金属性のものがよく用いられ、油絵ではクルミやサクラなどの硬材でつくった板が愛用されている。通常これらのパレットには親指を入れる穴があけられ、左手（右利きの場合）に持って使うようにつくられている。長方形か楕円(だえん)形が普通であるが、アーム型とかフランゼン型とよばれる大型変形パレットもあり、アトリエでは、絵の具キャビネットや机の天板がパレットに使われることもある。

　エジプト考古学では、書記の筆記用具とか化粧用具として、顔料(がんりょう)・化粧料などを擦りつぶしたり溶いたりするのに使われた粘板岩や片岩の平板をパレットとよぶ。先王朝時代後期には、実用を離れた精巧な浮彫り装飾を施した儀式用のものがつくられるようになった。中央部にあるすり鉢状の凹部がわずかに機能的な役割を示しているだけで、道具としてよりも美術遺品としての価値が高い。よく知られる作例として「ナルメル王のパレット」（カイロ、エジプト博物館）がある。

　本来の絵画用具としてのパレットから派生して、比喩(ひゆ)的な意味に使用される場合もある。画家が限定した数の絵の具だけを選んでパレット上に準備した場合、その一群の絵の具の選び方、パレット上での並べ方、また選ばれた一組の絵の具などをパレットとよぶ。さらに、1点の絵画、1人の画家、あるいは一流派などの絵の具の使い方とか色調の整え方を分析整理して形式化したものを意味する。「パレットが明るい（暗い）」というような表現は、このような意味においてである。
