Swiss-born French poet and novelist. His real name was Frédéric Sauser. He left his hometown at the age of 15 for Russia, and then travelled to Siberia, China, Mongolia and Persia, changing jobs in various ways before returning to the United States in 1912, where he wrote the pioneering modern poem "Easter in New York". During World War I, he was a Swiss citizen and enlisted in the Foreign Legion, where he was wounded and lost his right arm. After the war, he established avant-garde techniques such as the abolition of punctuation and the use of simultaneous speech in works such as "19 Elastic Poems" (1919), a collection of rhythmic poems that seem to be slammed with one hand. His novels The Severed Hand (1946) and The Division of Heaven (1949) are semi-mythical autobiographies based on the recollections of this adventurous poet, while Kodak (1924) and Hollywood (1936) are reportages that could be called photographic records of the spirit of the times, and La d'Ol (1925), Morabasine (1926), and Take Me to the Ends of the Earth (1956) are stories of intense destructive power. In 1961 he received the Grand Prix de Literature de Paris. [Motoyoshi Sone] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
