An annual plant of the Acanthaceae family (APG classification: Acanthaceae). The stem is square, 10-40 cm tall, lies prostrate at the base, and branches abundantly. The leaves are oblong and 2-5 cm long. From summer to autumn, pale purple to white flowers appear in spikes at the ends of the branches. The calyx has four lobes to the base. The corolla is bilabial. The corolla lobes are folded up like a tile in the bud. There are two stamens. The anthers are two-lobed, offset vertically, with the lower lobe having a spur. The capsule is oblong and bears four seeds. It is commonly found on roadsides, grows south of Honshu, and is widely distributed mainly in tropical Asia. Young leaves are sometimes eaten.
