Because of frequent floods, the Shinbori River was excavated in the center in 1687 (Jokyo 4), the Aiba River in 1739 (Genbun 4), and the Ubakura Canal was opened downstream of the Matsumoto River in 1855 (Ansei 2) to drain the water and use it for irrigation and shipping.
