Mount Kita

Japanese: 北岳 - きただけ
Mount Kita

Located in the northwest of Yamanashi Prefecture, in the northern part of the Akaishi Mountains (Southern Alps), Kitadake is the second highest mountain in Japan after Mount Fuji. It belongs to Minami-Alps City. Its elevation is 3,193 meters. Together with Ainotake and Notori-dake, it is also called Shirane Sanzan or Mt. Shirane. It is made up of old rocks such as slate, phyllite, chert or sandstone, and diabase tuff. The majestic mountain's shape from Yashajin Pass, an observation deck in the Southern Alps, is exceptional. The rock wall on the eastern slope, which is about 600 meters high, is known to climbers as the "Kitadake Buttress," and the snowfields of Okaba-zawa and alpine plants such as Kitadake-sou are also famous.

The most common route up the mountain is to take a bus from Kofu, cross the Yashajin Tunnel, go to Hirogawara, and then pass through Shirane Oike.
