An ocean current that crosses from east to west between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer. In the Indian Ocean, it is only present during the cold season in the Northern Hemisphere, but in the North Pacific and North Atlantic, it exists all year round. The North Equatorial Current in the Pacific Ocean originates near the confluence of the California Current from the north and the Equatorial Countercurrent from the south off the coast of Central America, flows west between 7 and 23 degrees north latitude, and splits into north and south currents east of the Philippines, connecting with the Equatorial Countercurrent and the Kuroshio Current, respectively. The current speed at the sea surface is 0.5 to 2 knots, and the volume of flow is greater in the west, reaching 50 to 70 million cubic meters per second around 140 degrees east longitude.
