Kitakata [city] - Kitakata

Japanese: 喜多方[市] - きたかた
Kitakata [city] - Kitakata
The city occupies the area from the northern part of the Aizu Basin to the southern part of Mt. Iide in the west of Fukushima Prefecture, and borders Yamagata Prefecture to the north. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central city, which straddles both banks of the Tazuki River, developed as a market town. After the opening of the Ban'etsu West Line in 1904, production of lacquerware (Aizu lacquerware), sake, miso, soy sauce, and raw silk increased. Manufacturing of wooden clogs and furniture using Aizu giri and aluminum smelting also took place, but they have since declined. There are more than 2,600 storehouses, including zashiki storehouses, storehouses, and brick storehouses, and since being featured on television and in magazines around 1975, the city has become known as a "town of storehouse buildings and ramen." Since then, roads and shopping streets directly connecting to Urabandai and Yamagata Prefecture have been developed, and the number of tourists has increased. In January 2006, the town of Shiokawa, Yamato, Atsushiokano, and Takago villages in Yama District were incorporated into the city. The Great East Japan Earthquake caused damage in the city: 554.63 km2 . 52,356 people (2010).
