… I have mainly spoken about England and America so far because most of the excellent works were written in English, but that does not mean that there are no masterpieces in other countries, such as the Swedish works mentioned above. France is particularly noteworthy, producing works such as 19th century detective Lecoq (1869) by Emile Gaboriau (1832-73) and other works with the same detective as the protagonist, the classic locked-room murder novel The Yellow Room (1907) by Gaston Leroux (1868-1927), and the Arsène Lupin series by M. Leblanc (1864-1941), which is famous in Japan for its numerous tricks, although it cannot be called a full-fledged detective novel. We cannot forget the Inspector Maigret series by Georges Simenon (1903-89). …
