The world's first illustrated introductory language textbook, published in 1658 by Comenius, is based on the methodological principle of starting from sensory, concrete objects and progressing to understanding abstract concepts, and of combining language with object recognition in teaching. By showing corresponding written words to the depicted objects, the book aimed to make encyclopedic knowledge of nature and culture accessible to everyone. It was a groundbreaking attempt to educationally integrate two media with different lineages in the history of communication: writing for the intellectual class and pictures for the masses, and became the forerunner of today's visual teaching materials.

1658年に刊行された世界最初の絵入りの言語入門教科書。コメニウス著。感覚的具体的事物から出発して抽象的概念の理解へ進むこと，言語を事物認識と結合して教えることという方法原理に基づいて作られている。絵に描かれた事物に文字を対応する形で示すことによって，自然と文化に関する百科全書的知識をすべての人に近づきやすいものにしようとした。これは知識人階級における文字と大衆における絵という，コミュニケーション史上異なった系譜をなす二つの媒体を教育的に統合する試みとして画期的であり，今日の視覚教材の先駆となった。
