[Born] Around 70 B.C. A Jewish rabbi born in Babylon around the 10th year of his life. He studied in Jerusalem at about the age of 40 and became a leader of the Pharisees. In opposition to the influential Shammai sect among the Pharisees at the time, he summarized the method of legal interpretation based on deduction and analogy in "Seven Rules" and took the position of progressive logic. In terms of ethics, he summarized the spirit of the entire law in a way that seemed to express the Golden Rule of Christianity in reverse, "Do not do to your neighbor what you would not want done to yourself," and he was open to non-believers and converts. After Shammai's death, those who followed Hillel formed the Hillel sect and became the mainstream in legal interpretation.
