Kisegawa-shuku

Japanese: 黄瀬川宿 - きせがわのしゅく

A post station in Suruga Province from the late ancient period to the Middle Ages. It was also written as Kisegawa or Kiyogawa. It was located west of the confluence of the Kisegawa and Kanogawa rivers, and the place name Kisegawa remains in Ooka, Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. According to the entry for October 18, 1180 in the Azuma Kagami, Minamoto no Yoritomo's troops were camped here. After that, Yoritomo won the Battle of Fujigawa and met Minamoto no Yoshitsune who had rushed here from Oshu. The post station was located at a strategic point connecting the Kamakura and Hakone areas with Izu, Suruga, and Kai provinces, and the Kamakura Shogunate placed importance on the area from a military perspective. The Muromachi Shogunate also placed importance on the area, and in 1402, there were ferries here along with the Tenryu, Oi, and Fuji rivers, and the Imagawa clan was appointed as the magistrate. From 1569 to 1570, Takeda Shingen and Hojo Ujiyasu faced off across the Kise River. During the Edo period, the area became Kisegawa Village, Sunto County, Suruga Province.

駿河国にあった古代末期から中世の宿駅。木瀬川・木世川とも書いた。黄瀬川と狩野(かの)川の合流点西部に位置し，現在の静岡県沼津市大岡に木瀬川の通称地名が残る。《吾妻鏡》治承４年（1180年）10月18日条によると，源頼朝の軍勢が当地に宿営している。その後，頼朝は富士川の戦で勝利し，この地で奥州から駆けつけた源義経と対面している。鎌倉・箱根方面と伊豆国・駿河国・甲斐国を結ぶ要衝に置かれた宿駅で，鎌倉幕府は軍事面から当地を重視した。室町幕府も同じく当地を重視し，1402年当時は天竜川・大井川・富士川などとともに当地に渡しがあり，今川氏がその奉行に任じられていた。1569年から1570年にかけて，武田信玄と北条氏政が黄瀬川を挟んで対峙(たいじ)している。江戸時代には駿河国駿東(すんとう)郡木瀬川村となった。
