French conductor. Born in Lyon, died in Paris. He studied violin at the Paris Conservatoire, and after graduating he studied composition under Roussel and conducting under Munch. After a period of creative activity he turned to conducting, and in 1946 he was appointed conductor of the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra. He went on to serve as principal conductor and music director of the Orchestre de la Raisonnée de Lamoureux, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre National de Radio France (now the Orchestre National de France). He first came to Japan in 1953 (Showa 28). Known for his elegant performance style and clear sound, he demonstrated a particularly high level of mastery in modern French music.
