Kan'ei Kujirai

Japanese: 鯨井勘衛 - くじらいかんえ

1831-1874 A silkworm farmer from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period.
He was born on November 22, 1836. In 1866, he experimented with growing mulberry seedlings on the banks of the Arakawa River, and built a silkworm rearing room called the Gensou-ro on the grounds of his home in Tamai Village, Saitama Prefecture (now Kumagaya City), where he taught how to raise silkworms in the cool, natural climate. In 1872, he became the Iruma Prefecture Silkworm Seed General Manager, and took charge of cracking down on the mass production of shoddy silkworm eggs. He died on June 27, 1874, at the age of 44. His works include "On the Pros and Cons of Silkworm Industry."

天保(てんぽう)2年11月22日生まれ。慶応2年荒川河原に桑苗を試作し,埼玉県玉井村(熊谷市)の自宅の敷地に元素楼という養蚕室をたて自然の気候にまかせる清涼育をおしえる。明治5年入間県蚕種大惣代になり,蚕種の粗製乱造の取り締まりにあたった。明治7年6月27日死去。44歳。著作に「蚕業得失論」など。
