Illustrated Tale of the Morning Glory

...The first puppet play was performed in January 1832 (Tenpo 3) at the Osaka Inari Shrine under the title "Live-Drawing Asagao Monogatari" (The Tale of Morning Glory) based on the posthumous manuscript of Yamada Kazanko and revised by the owner of Suishoen. This work was combined with "Illustrated Tale of Morning Glory" (The Tale of Morning Glory) by Nishizawa Ippo, which was performed as a kabuki play around the Kaei era (1848-54), to create the currently performed "Live-Drawing Asagao Monogatari." The original story dealt with the family strife of the Ouchi clan, but this part has been omitted and only the love story between Miyuki and Asojiro is performed today. ...

…人形浄瑠璃では，32年(天保3)正月に山田案山子の遺稿をもとに翠松園主人の校補で《生写朝顔話》の名題により大坂稲荷社内で上演されたのが最初。この作品に，嘉永(1848‐54)ごろ歌舞伎で上演された西沢一鳳作《絵入稗史蕣物語（えいりしようせつあさがおものがたり）》を加味したものが，現在上演される《生写朝顔話》である。原作は大内のお家騒動を扱っていたが，現在はこの部分は割愛され，深雪と阿曾次郎との恋物語のみが上演されている。…
