A seaport city on Poverty Bay in the eastern part of North Island, New Zealand. It is the center of the Gisborne region, which forms the easternmost tip of the island. There are many Maori people in this region. Generally consisting of hills and mountains, sheep farming is popular, and wool and frozen meat are the main exports. In 1769, John Cook landed nearby, but was unable to obtain food from the hostile natives, so he is said to have named the bay Poverty Bay. It is also famous as a summer resort.
