Tosando - Tosando

Japanese: 東山道 - とうさんどう
Tosando - Tosando
One of the Five Kinai Seven Roads. A road that connected the mountainous countries from Kinai to the northeast. It is roughly equivalent to the Nakasendo in the early modern period. It also refers to these countries, and up until the beginning of the 8th century, there were eight provinces: Omi, Mino, Hida, Shinano, Kozuke, Musashi, Shimotsuke, and Mutsu. Soon, Dewa was added, and Musashi was moved to the Tokaido, making it eight provinces in the Engishiki. In 718, Iwaki and Iwase were established, and in 721, Suwa was established, but they were soon abolished.
