Chichibu Basin

A roughly rectangular tectonic basin in the center of the Chichibu Mountains in western Saitama Prefecture. The floor of the basin is made up of Neogene layers, which contrasts sharply with the 1000m-class Chichibu Mountains surrounding it, such as Mt. Buko. The Arakawa River, Akabira River, and other rivers run through the basin, eroding the floor of the basin. As a result, the height of the basin floor is not uniform, and it is divided into hills that have escaped erosion, the river terraces of the Arakawa River and Akabira River, and alluvial lowlands. The terraces are in two levels, with the lower level being particularly wide and continuous. Chichibu City is the center of the area, and Nagatoro Town and Minano Town are located along the Arakawa River, and Ogano Town is located along the Akabira River. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, with the cultivation of konjac and shiitake mushrooms, lumber, cement, and other products being produced. The Chichibu Railway, National Route 140, and National Route 299 pass through the area. It is included in Buko Prefectural Natural Park and Nagatoro Tamayodo Prefectural Natural Park.

埼玉県西部，秩父山地の中央部にあるほぼ四角形の構造盆地。盆地床は新第三紀層からなり，武甲山など 1000m級の周囲の秩父山地ときわだった対照を示す。盆地内には荒川，赤平川などが流れ，盆地床を浸食している。このため盆地床の高度は一様でなく，浸食を免れて残存する丘陵地，荒川，赤平川の河岸段丘面や沖積低地の地形に分けられる。段丘面は上下 2段で，特に下段の段丘が広く連続している。中心地の秩父市をはじめ，荒川沿いに長瀞町，皆野町，赤平川沿いに小鹿野町がある。農林業が中心で，特にコンニャクやシイタケの栽培，製材，セメントなどの生産が行なわれる。秩父鉄道，国道140号線，299号線が通じる。武甲県立自然公園，長瀞玉淀県立自然公園に含まれる。
