A Kabuki and Kyogen writer from the late Edo period. His real name was Aoji, and he was a bill-broker in Kuramae, Edo. His haiku names were Wajima, Eisi, and Shisei. He succeeded to the family headship in Bunka 1 (1804), but was a fan of Ichikawa Danjūrō VII and frequented theatrical circles, and in 1806 he made a name for himself as a Kyogen writer. In 1807 he treated people connected to the three Edo theatres with a generous gift of yaoyuzen, and was deposed and became a writer in 1808. He became a founding writer in Bunsei 12 (1829), and retired by 1848 (1848). As a writer, he is known for his Shosagoto pieces, such as Kiyomoto's "Michiyuki Tabiji no Hanagurō" and "Shime Noh Shiso Zu," but he is also well versed in the historical facts of the theatrical world, and is renowned as a writer of essays, such as "The Author Tanao Oroshi," "The Author's Annual Events," "Misasaya Nijiji Gekijō Scribe," and "Kakuya Suzumen." <References> Sekine Tadamasa and Sekine Masanao, "Meijin Kichinroku," Collection of Historical Materials on the Culture of the Common People of Japan, Vol. 6

江戸後期の歌舞伎狂言作者。江戸蔵前の札差伊勢屋宗三郎,本姓青地。俳名は和島,栄思,思声。文化1(1804)年家督を継いだが,7代目市川団十郎を贔屓にして劇界に出入りし,同9年には狂言作者として名を出したりした。同10年江戸三座の関係者を八百善で大盤振舞し,廃嫡されて同13年より作者となった。文政12(1829)年立作者となり,嘉永1(1848)年までで隠退。作者としては清元「道行旅路の花聟」や「〆能色相図」など,所作事作品が知られるが,劇界の故実にくわしく,『作者たなおろし』『作者年中行事』『三升屋二三治戯場書留』『賀久屋寿々免』などの随筆作者として名高い。<参考文献>関根只誠・関根正直『名人忌辰録』,『日本庶民文化史料集成』6巻
