Otsuka ruins

Japanese: 大塚遺跡 - おおつかいせき

The remains of a settlement from the middle Yayoi period were located on a plateau about 50m above sea level on the left bank of the midstream of the Hayabuchi River, straddling Nakagawa-cho and Ushikubo-cho in Kohoku Ward, Yokohama City. The entire area was excavated over a period of three years, beginning in 1973, in conjunction with the development plans for Kohoku New Town. The settlement was surrounded by a ditch with a V-shaped cross section, and its plan was a deformed oval with a long axis of 200m and a maximum width of 130m. The remains of 97 pit dwellings were discovered within, revealing the full shape of the moated settlement. The dwellings are basically rectangular with rounded corners or oval, with four main pillars.

横浜市港北区中川町，牛久保町にまたがり，早淵川中流左岸の標高約50mの台地上に位置した弥生時代中期の集落跡。港北ニュータウンの開発計画にともなって1973年から3ヵ年の歳月を要して全域を発掘した。集落は，断面がV字形をした溝でとり囲まれ，その平面規模は長軸200m，最大幅130mの変形楕円形で，なかに竪穴住居跡が97基発見されて環濠集落の全容が明らかとなった。住居跡の基本的な形は隅丸長方形か小判形で，主柱4本からなるものである。
