Mark Twain's representative adventure novel for boys. Published in 1876. The story is written in a light-hearted style with a lot of dialogue, depicting the life of Tom Sawyer, who hates the cramped life in a rural town with schools and churches, and instead roams freely in the great outdoors with his friend, the homeless boy Huck Finn, and goes on many adventures. Many of the adventures are based on the author's experiences as a boy, and evoke American nostalgia for the nature of the American Southwest before it was contaminated by civilization, and for the simple human relationships of the pioneer days. At the same time, the story also sharply captures the psychology of boys, as in the famous fence-painting scene, and has universal appeal that has made it a favorite of young readers of all times and countries.

マーク･トウェーンの代表的な少年冒険小説。1876年刊。学校や教会など窮屈な田舎町の生活を嫌って，仲間の浮浪少年ハック･フィンなどと大自然の中で自由に遊びまわり，冒険を重ねるトム･ソーヤーの生活が，会話を多く用いた軽快な文体で描かれている。その冒険の多くは少年時代の作者の体験に基づいており，文明に汚染される以前のアメリカ南西部の自然や，開拓時代の純朴な人間関係に対するアメリカ人の郷愁を感じさせるが，同時に，有名なフェンスのペンキ塗りの場面のように，少年特有の心理を鋭くとらえており，あらゆる時代のあらゆる国の若い読者に愛読される普遍的な魅力をもつ。
