…He remained single due to his poor health, but he was able to associate with people from all walks of life, and was revered as a teacher of his time because of his sentimental, pious, and gentle personality. In 18th-century Germany, he wrote two volumes of Fables and Tales (1746-48), which were the second most widely read works after the Bible, as well as Moral Poems and Tales (1754) and Hymns and Odes (1757). With his plays The False Believer (1745), The Lottery (1746), and The Kind Sisters (1747), he established the French “serious comedy” in Germany and contributed to the establishment of realistic “civil drama.” …
