Among the primitive fishes belonging to the Paleozoic era, which belonged to the gnathopods, there were two groups: those with a pair of external nostrils (the dinarians), and those with only one (the monorrhinians), located in the middle of the nose. The best-known of the latter, the cephalothorax, had a pineal foramen between the eyes and a single external nares slightly forward of it on the dorsal surface of the hard bony armor covering the cephalothorax. A similar arrangement is seen in the lamprey, a cyclostome of the jawless fishes, and therefore the cyclostomes are thought to descend from the monorrhinians.

　古生代の無顎（むがく）類に属した原始魚類には，外鼻孔つまり外界に開く鼻の入口を1対もつグループ(双鼻類)と，正中部に1個だけもつグループ(単鼻類)があった。後者のうち最もよく知られている頭甲類という仲間では，頭胸部をおおう堅固な骨性の装甲の背面で，両眼の中間に松果体孔，その少し前方に単一の外鼻孔external naresがあった。現存の無顎類である円口類のヤツメウナギでもこれと同様の配置がみられ，そのため円口類は単鼻類の系統をひくものと考えられる。…
