Kitago [village] - Kitago

Japanese: 北郷[村] - きたごう

A village in Higashiusuki County in northern Miyazaki Prefecture. Population 2,303 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Isuzu River, it is made up of three districts: Unoma, Irishita, and Kuroki. In the past, it belonged to the Usa Shrine territory and was under the control of the Tsuchimochi clan, but in the early modern period it belonged to the Nobeoka Domain. Most of the village area is forest, but farmland has been opened up along the Isuzu River, which flows east through the center. Agriculture and forestry are carried out with an emphasis on shiitake mushroom cultivation, timber, livestock, and rice farming. In 1964, it was designated as Hyuga Nobeoka New Industrial City, and efforts are being made to promote industry. In the Unoma district in the center, there is the Unoma Jizo, known as the fire-prevention Jizo.

宮崎県北部，東臼杵郡の村。人口2303(1995)。五十鈴川の上流域を占め，宇納間，入下，黒木の3地区よりなる。古くは宇佐神宮領に属し，土持氏の支配下にあったが，近世は延岡藩に属した。村域のほとんどは山林で，中央部を東流する五十鈴川沿いに耕地が開かれている。シイタケ栽培をはじめ，木材，畜産，米作などを重点に農林業が営まれている。1964年日向延岡新産業都市に指定され，産業の振興が図られている。中心地の宇納間地区には火よけ地蔵の名で知られる宇納間地蔵がある。
