A fu from the Northern Song Dynasty, China, written by Su Shi. It was completed in 1082. The author was exiled from the capital in 1082 due to political strife, and in July of the following year, he described his visit to Red Cliffs on the Yangtze River. He visited Red Cliffs again in October of the same year and wrote a sequel, so the work written in July is called the Former Fu to Red Cliffs and the one written in October is called the Later Fu to Red Cliffs. In both works, the author vividly describes the joys of boating with friends, along with awe at the harsh nature and sadness at the fleeting nature of life. The fu includes a recollection of the Battle of Red Cliffs, famous in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but the actual battlefield was located much further upstream. Fu flourished during the Han Dynasty, but in the Song Dynasty it became known as "wen fu" and was extremely prosaic. Fu to Red Cliffs is a representative masterpiece and the most famous of Chinese fu.
