According to ancient Indian documents and inscriptions, a kind of trade association existed among merchants and craftsmen. This organization was called śreṇi in Sanskrit and seṇi in Pāli, and was also called gaṇa, pūga, etc. Western and Indian researchers have given the translation of śreṇi as 'guild'.
