It was originally called 'Biku' or 'Dead Ball', and was introduced to Japan in 1909 (Meiji 42) by Kani Isao and Tsuboi Kanemichi under the name 'Circular Dead Ball', which used a circular court. In 1913 (Taisho 2), the 'Outline of School Gymnastics Instruction' published by the Tokyo Prefectural Sports Committee lists dead ball among the games that are primarily competitive. In 1917, Nagai Michiaki, a professor at Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School, introduced a square court, which was called 'Square Dead Ball'. In 1926 (Taisho 15), Otani Takeichi, a professor at Tokyo Higher Normal School, renamed it 'Dodge Ball' (dodge means to avoid something). The Japan Dodge Ball Association (JDBA) was founded in 1991 (Heisei 3). The game is played in two ways: on the inside and outside of a circle or square court, the opponents and allies are divided into two groups, and the players on the outside try to hit the players on the inside with the ball, as in the center hit game, or on the inside of a square court, players hit each other along the center line, and if they catch the ball, they can throw it back, but if they miss, they are out and must go to the outfield (outside the opponent's court). If they get the opponent out with an attack from the outfield, they can return to the original infield.
