1493‐1536 Grand vizier (sadorazam) of the Ottoman Empire. Of Greek descent, he was kidnapped by pirates as a child and is said to have received the desirme and entered the Ottoman court. He served the then Sultan, Suleiman I, and was highly trusted, becoming Grand Vizier in 1523. This was an unusual promotion for him, as he was only 30 years old at the time. In 1524, he married the Sultan's sister. He fought in numerous campaigns, including the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the siege of Vienna (1529), and the war against the Safavid dynasty of Iran (1532-34), and expanded the size of his fiefdoms.
