Sea snakes are called "sea cobras" because they have many similar characteristics to cobras, and are thought to have evolved from terrestrial cobras. They are divided into the subfamily Hydrophiinae and the subfamily Laticaudinae of the Elapidae family. There are 15 genera and 53 species of sea snakes that live in the warm waters of the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, the Western Pacific Ocean, and Oceania, and some reach the Pacific coast of Central America. …

...They are 1 to 1.3 meters long, with a maximum of 1.8 meters, and have a thick body. They come to the coast of Honshu on the Kuroshio Current. Although they are sea snakes, members of the Laticaudinae subfamily have nostrils that open on the sides, a fairly wide abdominal plate, and a fin-like tail that is simply a change in the skin rather than a support for the skeleton, so they retain many of the characteristics of terrestrial snakes. They are also the only oviparous species of sea snake.
