[Died] October 10, 2013. Denver, Colorado. American astronaut. Full name Malcolm Scott Carpenter. After studying astronautics at the University of Colorado, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1949 and served in the Korean War. In the late 1950s, he became a Navy test pilot, and in April 1959, he was one of seven astronauts selected for NASA's Project Mercury. He became the second American to orbit the Earth on the Aurora 7, launched on May 24, 1962, and orbited the Earth three times (→spacecraft). In 1964, he injured his left arm in a motorcycle accident and retired from astronaut duties. In 1965, he participated in the Navy's Sealab II underwater habitation experiment, living 62.5 meters underwater. He retired from the Navy in 1969 and became a civilian involved in marine energy research.

[Died] June 14, 1877. Bristol. British female social worker. Social reformer, founder of the so-called "Rags School," a tuition-free school for poor children. Educated at a school run by her father, a Unitarian minister, in Exeter. In 1829, she and her mother opened a girls' school in Bristol. In 1846, she established the "Rags School" in the slums of Bristol, a boys' reformatory in 1852, and a girls' reformatory in 1854. Earlier, in 1833, she became interested in India through Indian leader R. Lowy and Boston social worker J. Tuckerman, and visited the country four times. After returning to the United States, she founded the British Indian Association for the Promotion of Indian Philosophy. In 1873, she visited North America and reported on the defects of the prison system there.

[Died] April 26, 1951. Chicago American composer. Entered Harvard University in 1893, studied music privately while at university, and after graduation studied composition under E. Elgar while working as vice president of his father's company. He portrayed modern American life realistically, with humor and poetry, incorporating jazz rhythms. His representative works include The Adventure of a Pram (1915) for orchestra and The Ballet (26).

[Died] June 28, 1929. Guilford, Surrey. British author and social reformer. Known for his friendship with the American poet Whitman. As a social reformer, he was influenced by W. Morris, lived in the Derbyshire countryside, and was involved in the Crafts movement. His major work was Towards Democracy (1883).

[Died] March 1, 1975, Athens, Georgia American zoologist. He made detailed observations of the ecology of wild gibbons and orangutans, and studied their lifestyles and social structures. He is considered one of the pioneers of research into animal societies focusing on mammals.

イギリスの女性社会事業家。社会改良家，貧困児のための無月謝学校であるいわゆる「ぼろ学校」の設立者。ユニテリアンの牧師であった父親がエクセターで経営していた学校で教育を受けた。 1829年母親とともにブリストルに女学校を開設。 1846年ブリストルのスラム街に「ぼろ学校」を，1852年に少年感化院を，1854年に少女感化院を設立。これより先の 1833年，インドの指導者 R.ローイやボストンの社会事業家 J.タッカーマンを通じてインドに関心をいだき前後4回インドを訪れ，帰国後「救印思潮普及全英インド協会」を設立した。 1873年北アメリカを訪問し，その刑務所制度の欠陥について報道した。
