The 31st (and last) king of Baekje, one of Korea's three ancient kingdoms (reigned 641-660). Eldest son of the previous king, King Mu. During his reign, the Tang Dynasty was established in China, and Baekje was in a time of crisis as King Taejong Muyeol of Silla, which was to the east, was at the height of its power. At the beginning of his reign, he defeated the Silla army advancing westward, but was gradually oppressed by the Silla army. In the 20th year of King Uija's reign (660), the Tang Dynasty allied with King Muyeol of Silla as a prelude to the subjugation of Goguryeo, and attacked Baekje from land and sea, defeating it. As a result, over 10,000 people, from royal family members to peasants, were forcibly taken to the Tang Dynasty, and the king himself died in Tang. The Tang Dynasty had close political and cultural ties with Japan.

朝鮮，古代三国の一つ百済の第 31代 (最後) の王 (在位 641～660) 。先王，武王の長子。王の時代は中国で唐が成立し，東隣の新羅は太宗武烈王の全盛時代で，百済の危機の時代であった。即位当初には西進する新羅軍を破っているが，逐次その勢力に圧迫されるにいたった。義慈王 20 (660) 年，唐は高句麗討伐の前提として新羅の武烈王と結び，陸海から百済を攻撃して破った。この結果，王族以下農民にいたるまで1万名余が唐に強制連行され，王も唐で没した。日本とは政治的にも文化的にも関係が深い。
