Flaccus, Marcus Fulvius

Roman politician of the 2nd century BC. Supporter of T. Gracchus (→Gracchus brothers), he implemented the agrarian reform from 130 BC. When a proposal to give public lands to Italians was blocked, he tried to open the way for Italians to acquire land by granting them Roman citizenship, and introduced the "Italian question" into Roman policy. He was elected consul in 125 BC over the opposition of the optimates, but the senate sent him to help Massilia, which was under attack by the Salvians. He returned in triumph in 123 BC and held the position of tribune in 122 BC to help promote the policies of G. Gracchus, but was defeated and killed along with Gracchus.

Roman statesman. As governor of Egypt (32-38), he pandered to the Greek citizens of Alexandria and implemented anti-Jewish policies, which led to persecution of the Jews in the city. However, in 38 he was unexpectedly arrested, convicted of conspiracy in Rome, exiled to the island of Andros in the Aegean Sea, and later executed. The Jewish philosopher Philo of Alexandria wrote a treatise denounceing him.
