Japanese: 潮だまり - しおだまり

Also called a tide pool, it is a depression in the intertidal zone of a rocky area where seawater is left behind at low tide. Tide pools are strongly affected by weather such as rain and direct sunlight, so the water quality, such as salinity and temperature, changes extremely drastically in a short period of time. For this reason, the organisms that live in tide pools must be able to withstand these severe environmental changes. The higher the tide pool is located, the longer it is isolated from the sea. Tide pools that are only connected to the sea at high tide can be isolated for two weeks or even a month.

タイドプールともいう。岩礁地帯の潮間帯において，干潮時に凹所に海水がとり残された場所。潮だまりは雨や太陽の直射など気象の影響を強く受けるため，塩分濃度･水温など水質が短時間できわめて激しく変化する。このため潮だまりにすむ生物は，この厳しい環境の変化に耐える性質をもつ必要がある。高い位置の潮だまりほど，海から隔離される時間が長い。大潮満潮時だけ海につながる潮だまりは，2週間もしくは1ヵ月以上も隔離されることになる。
