Japan Shogi Association

Japanese:
Japan Shogi Association

This is a public interest foundation that aims to promote the development of the traditional game of Go, contribute to the improvement of culture, and spread the game both domestically and internationally. It was founded in 1924 (Taisho 13) with the support of Baron Okura Kishichirou (1882-1963) through the merger of the Honinbo School, Houensha, and Hiseikai. This is said to be the "Great Go World Merger" that put an end to the chaotic state of the Go world that had continued since the collapse of the Iemoto system along with the feudal domain system. The activities of the foundation cover all aspects of Go, from running and managing various Go tournaments, managing the training of professional Go players, to spreading the game both domestically and internationally, running and managing amateur Go tournaments, certifying Go skills and issuing Go certificates, and publishing Go-related books, magazines, and newspapers, as well as providing Internet services. Since the 1990s, the foundation has also been working with the Chinese Go Association and the Korean Go Association to hold more international professional Go tournaments. It also serves as the secretariat for the International Go Federation (IGF), which has 74 member countries and regions (as of 2012), and hosts the World Amateur Go Championship every year. As of April 2013, it has 326 professional players from 1st to 9th dan and 56 staff members. In Japan, it has the Tokyo main branch in Ichigaya, the Tokyo Yurakucho Go Center, headquarters in Osaka and Nagoya, and four overseas Go centers in Amsterdam, New York, Seattle and Sao Paulo as bases for promoting Go.
