The founder of the Shinnai-bushi Tsuruga school. His real name was Shobei Takai. He was from Tsuruga, Echizen (Fukui Prefecture). He studied under Miyakoji Kagadayu (later Fujimatsu Satsuma-no-jo), and after becoming independent he changed his name to Asahi Wakasa-no-jo and then Tsuruga Wakasa-no-jo. He formed an alliance with fellow student Tsuruga Shinnai as a guest performer, and perfected the Shinnai-bushi style of Ozashiki Joruri. His signature pieces are "Akegarasu" and "Rancho". 新内節鶴賀派の祖。本名高井庄兵衛。越前(福井県)敦賀の人。宮古路加賀太夫(のち富士松薩摩掾)に学び、独立して朝日若狭掾、ついで鶴賀若狭掾と改称。同門の鶴賀新内を客分として提携し、御座敷浄瑠璃としての新内節を大成。代表曲「明烏」「蘭蝶」。享保二~天明六年(一七一七‐八六)
