...The edge of the beak has a fine comb-like filter, and by placing the upper part of the beak downwards in the water, they suck in the water and mud into their mouths, and use the filter to separate and eat the tiny food particles in the mud. Small species feed on diatoms and blue-green algae, but the greater flamingo (illustration) also feeds on plankton, small shellfish, and crustaceans. For this reason, the structure of the beak and filter, and the feeding method, vary slightly depending on the species.
