Tohoku Expressway - Tohoku Expressway

An expressway that crosses the Tohoku region from east to west and is managed by East Nippon Expressway Company. There are three routes: (1) The Kamaishi-Akita Line (Akita Expressway), which starts in Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture, overlaps with the Tohoku Longitudinal Expressway (Tohoku Expressway) between Hanamaki City and Kitakami City, connects with the Japan Sea Coast Tohoku Expressway in the southern part of Akita City, and reaches Akita City; (2) The Tohoku Expressway branches off at Sendai City (which overlaps with the Tohoku Longitudinal Expressway between Sendai City and Murata Town, Miyagi Prefecture, in effect branching off at Murata Junction), connects with the Tohoku Chuo Expressway in Yamagata City and the planned Japan Sea Coast Tohoku Expressway in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, and reaches Sakata City; and (3) The Iwaki-Niigata Line (Ban'etsu Expressway), which starts in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, connects with the Tohoku Expressway in Koriyama City, and reaches Niigata City and then connects with the Hokuriku Expressway. The total length is 582 km, with four lanes on all sections (temporarily two lanes in some sections). These lines promote exchanges between the Pacific side, central area, and Japan Sea side of the Tohoku region, which were previously geographically separated, and play a major role in integrating them. They also overcome the inconvenience of transportation in winter, improving the convenience of life in the areas along the lines.

The entire 213 km of the Iwaki-Niigata Line was opened in 1997. As of December 2011, 158 km of the Kamaishi-Akita Line between Hanamaki City and Akita City, and 137 km of the Sakata Line between Murata Town and Sakata City, are open. The section between Tono City, Iwate Prefecture and Hanamaki City is being constructed under the new direct management method, with the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as the main developer.
