Quenching - Quenching

Japanese: クエンチング - くえんちんぐ
Quenching - Quenching

…There are two types of quenching: the phenomenon in which the intensity of luminescence such as fluorescence or phosphorescence is reduced by some kind of action, and the phenomenon in which the field of view becomes dark in a certain direction when a birefringent crystal plate is rotated between two polarizers with mutually perpendicular polarization directions. The former is called quenching, and the latter is called extinction. Quenching occurs in the following ways: (1) the excitation energy of the luminescent molecule is lost by collision with a quenching substance, (2) a chemical reaction occurs by collision with a quenching substance, or an intermolecular compound that does not emit light is formed, or (3) the luminescent molecule changes to a molecular state that does not emit light by nonradiative transition or decomposition reaction. …
