A microscope used to observe the structure of opaque materials such as metals, alloys, and ceramics, also known as a reflective microscope. In the case of a normal optical microscope (called a biological microscope or transmission microscope) used to observe plant or animal cells, light is applied to the back of the sample, and the transmitted light is magnified by the objective lens and eyepiece. In contrast, a metallurgical microscope incorporates a glass plate or a right-angle prism between the objective lens and eyepiece, and light is applied to the front of the sample, and the reflected light is magnified by the objective lens and eyepiece. The magnification is limited to about 1000 times, and for magnifications greater than this, an electron microscope is used.
