The Han-style slips of the Emperor's reign - Kyoenkankan

These Han dynasty documents were discovered in the lower reaches of the Etchina River in the northern part of Gansu Province, China. They are written in ink on wooden tablets (toku, mokkan) about 23 centimeters long (1 shaku in the Han dynasty). This area was Juyan County, Zhangye County, during the Han dynasty, and was a frontline base in the war against the Xiongnu from the time of Emperor Wu of the Former Han to the early Eastern Han dynasty, so many of the documents are official documents related to the management of the base. There are two types of Juyan tablets. The first is about 10,000 pieces collected in 1930 by a detachment of the Northwest Scientific Exploration Team led by Sven Hedin. The whereabouts of the original documents became unknown due to the chaos of the Sino-Japanese War, and only photographic plates remain. Recently, a notebook from that time that recorded the locations of the excavations was discovered in Beijing, making it possible to reorganize them. The second group consists of approximately 20,000 items obtained during a new excavation and survey conducted by the Juyan Archaeological Team of Gansu Province from 1972 to 1976. This group exceeds the first group in both quantity and quality, and further research is being conducted.
