Czech composer and violinist. He studied under composer JB Forster (1859-1951) and Dvorak at the Prague Conservatory, and was friends with Novák. In 1898, he married Dvorak's daughter. He was active as a leader in the Czech music world, serving as the director of his alma mater and mentoring Martinu and others. In his early masterpiece, Serenade for Strings (1892), he showed the lyricism inherited from his teacher Dvorak, but he gradually moved to more complex writing styles and used atonal sounds (see Atonal Music). His representative works from his mature period include the symphonic poem Prague (1904), Symphony No. 2 Asrael (1905-1906), and the symphonic poem Summer Fairy Tale (1909). His grandson J. Suk (1929-2011) is also known as a virtuoso violinist, and founded the Suk Trio in 1952. He played the viola in a quintet and performed with the Smetana String Quartet. He is active in both solo and chamber music. He has visited Japan many times since 1959. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
