In 1869 (Meiji 2), the Osaka Military Academy was established with the aim of training army officers, and the following year, the Training Corps was established within the Academy with the aim of training non-commissioned officers. In 1871, it moved to Tokyo and was renamed the Training Corps, and in 1873, it came under the direct control of the Ministry of the Army. Many of the children of poor lower-class samurai joined the corps as their first course to advance in the army, and Hideki Tojo's father, Hidenori, rose from the Training Corps to become a non-commissioned officer and then an officer, and rose to the rank of lieutenant general as the first top graduate of the Army War College. ...
