A mineral belonging to the alkali pyroxenes. Its chemical composition is (Ca,Na)(Mg,Fe ²⁺ , Fe ³⁺ , Al)Si ₂ O ₆ , and is intermediate between jadeite NaAlSi ₂ O ₆ , diopside CaMgSi ₂ O ₆ , and hedensite CaFe ²⁺ Si ₂ O _6. It has light to dark green, sometimes brown, short columnar, granular, or leaf-like crystals. Monoclinic system. Mohs hardness 5-6, specific gravity 3.3-3.4. It is well cleaved. Along with garnet, it is a major component of eclogite, and is also found in metamorphic rocks of the lanthanite schist facies that were metamorphosed under high pressure.

アルカリ輝石に属する鉱物。化学組成は(Ca,Na)(Mg,Fe^2＋，Fe^3＋，Al)Si₂O₆で，主としてヒスイ輝石NaAlSi₂O₆と透輝石CaMgSi₂O₆，ヘデン輝石CaFe^2＋Si₂O₆の中間組成のもの。淡緑色～暗緑色で，ときに褐色の短柱状，粒状または葉片状の結晶。単斜晶系。モース硬度5～6，比重3.3～3.4。へき開がよく発達する。ザクロ石とともにエクロジャイトの主要な構成鉱物で，そのほか高圧下で変成されたランセン石片岩相の変成岩に含まれる。
